The MARISTÁN network is an academic collaboration between universities in Latin America and Europe, which was established in 1997 under the umbrella of the European Union’s Latin America Academic Training Programme (ALFA):
The MARISTÁN network is made up of the following institutions:
Given the diverse nature of psychiatric illness and the reach and complexity of the discipline of mental health research, the MARISTÁN network began by focusing on patients who need long term community care, either because of the severity of their illness or the extent of their disability. As the network developed, however, this focus broadened to incorporate the expertise and needs of its constituent members, but without losing the central theme of community mental health care.
The aims of the MARISTÁN network are to:
Promote cooperation in order to reduce gaps and inequalities between countries.
Undertake research that will enable the transfer of new technologies, including innovative methods and instruments of evaluation.
Contribute to the training of professionals in the basic principles of community models of mental health care.
Among the activities of the network are programmes of postgraduate education and partnership on a multicentre study.
